Is MyRobots.com the 'Facebook for Robots?' Verdict: Maybe

Yesterday saw the launch of a website called MyRobots.com, which aims to be a sort of social network and cloud communications system for consumer robots and other "smart" household objects. It's a great idea, but like most great ideas, it may come with a catch.

The idea behind MyRobots is to create a social network where robots can communicate with you and with each other. Just like Facebook, your robots get their very own profile (created by you unless your robot is a genius) and the ability to update their statuses whenever they feel like it. Unlike Facebook, these status updates will be useful information, like "I'm almost out of batteries" or "my dust bin is full" or "help the cat has me cornered, requesting authorization to deploy laser cannons."

But it gets even better than anti-cat laser cannons. If both robots?and stationary objects can use this service (and that's the plan), the possibilities are virtually endless. For example, if you leave your fridge open and then leave the house for the day, the fridge could ask your robot vacuum to drive over and push it closed. Or maybe you've just posted a bunch of wild party pics to your Facebook account, which could clue your robovac in to the fact that it should probably not start trying to clean up at 7 a.m. the next morning.?Of course, it's already possible to enable a variety of robots (and other household devices) to communicate via existing social networks like Facebook and Twitter and whatnot to tell you (and the rest of the world) how they're doing, but MyRobots would allow a much greater degree of interactivity.

The primary difference between MyRobots.com and a site like Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus is that MyRobots is run by a company that wants to sell you robots: RobotShop.com. The potential issue, then, is that there could be some inherent conflict since the owner of this social network is also trying to sell you the hardware that runs on the social network, and they're already evaluating partnership options with manufacturers. In the short term, though, RobotShop is hoping to make money through a couple of web-based services, specifically:

Cloud Services- At the moment, access to the MyRobots cloud data engine is free, but that's only going to last for a limited time. After that, you'll need to buy tokens for an unspecified amount of (real) money. Each one of your robots needs one token per month of access.

Applications- Developers can use the MyRobots service to develop, sell, and support cloud-based applications. RobotShop keeps 25% of all transactions.

So is this really the Facebook of robots? I'm not sure. I definitely like the idea, but it's important to keep in mind that this is someone's business, and not just a robot social network for the sake of having a robot social network. This may make it better, since it gives RobotShop more resources to work with. It also may make it worse, because the long-term bottom line is that RobotShop is probably going to do what's profitable, and that may not necessarily be what you're looking for (or currently expecting).?Either way, if you choose to participate (and you want to take advantage of the cloud and apps), you'll be tying yourself in to this whole token thing, RobotShop's vision (as opposed to a pure community-driven vision), and whatever strings end up getting attached.

Again, I like this idea, and I certainly hope the MyRobots becomes a success. It's just important to know all the details of what you're getting into before you (or your robot) invest time (and eventually money) into an idea like this.

Facebook Must Change in Europe

Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Facebook Inc., the world?s biggest social networking site, will overhaul its service in Europe over the next six months as a result of an investigation into how the social network handles personal data.

Facebook ?has agreed to a wide range of best practice improvements? to its service that will get a formal review in July, the Irish data-protection agency said today, after concluding a three-month audit. Facebook?s Ireland operation is responsible for all the Palo Alto, California-based company?s users outside the U.S. and Canada, the agency said.

?This was a challenging engagement both for my office and for Facebook Ireland,? Billy Hawkes, Ireland?s data-protection commissioner, said in an e-mail. The report said there has to be ?increased transparency and controls for the use of personal data for advertising purposes? and ?the deletion of data held from user interactions with the site much sooner.?

The agency began reviewing Facebook?s compliance with Irish and European Union data-protection rules three months ago and conducted an on-site audit of the U.S. company?s offices there.

Facebook agreed to improve the information users get on what happens to deleted or removed content and to simplify explanations of its privacy policies.

Geographical Spread

?This is a real way for Facebook to test this relatively new and prominent service,? said Tanguy Van Overstraeten, head of data protection at law firm Linklaters LLP. ?They are faced with their own success. They have to tackle so many different positions because of the geographical spread and rules that may be different from one country to another.?

Facebook said it would work closely with privacy commissioners and regulators to demonstrate its compliance with legal requirements.

?The people who use Facebook take privacy and data protection seriously and so do we,? Richard Allan, Facebook?s director of public policy for Europe, said in a blog post in response to the Irish audit.

In the U.S., Facebook last month agreed to settle complaints by the Federal Trade Commission that it failed to protect users? privacy or disclose how their data could be used. The proposed 20-year agreement would require Facebook to get clear consent from users before sharing material posted under earlier, more restrictive terms, and would compel independent reviews of Facebook?s privacy practices.

Subject to Scrutiny

Facebook is tied in by the FTC and by the commitment they have given the Irish data protection agency in the final recommendation ?to ensure that before they produce anything, new product, new use, that they?ll be subjecting it to scrutiny,? said Gary Davis, deputy commissioner at the Irish data-protection agency.

In Ireland, the company agreed to ?phase in? more transparency and control for the use of personal data for advertising purposes and to users to delete friend requests, tags or messages and to give users more control over their addition to groups.

?They can be very transparent, but it must be done in a fashion that it is legible,? said Van Overstraeten. ?This should be a shared burden? between authorities raising more awareness among users on privacy matters and ?companies designing ways to be transparent in a legible manner.?

Watchdogs from several of the EU?s 27 nations have said they will probe possible privacy violations in a feature on Facebook that uses facial-recognition software to suggest people to tag in photos without their permission. A German data- protection agency said it may fine Facebook over facial- recognition. Norway?s privacy watchdog is also investigating.

Constant Interaction

Facebook, which is considering raising about $10 billion in an initial public offering a person with knowledge of the matter said last month, noted the agency acknowledged the pace at which it offers new products and features requires constant interaction with regulators.

?This report is not the conclusion of our engagement with Facebook Ireland,? said the Irish agency?s Davis. ?Taking a leadership position that moves from compliance with the law to the achievement of best practice is for Facebook Ireland to decide.?

The Irish audit was planned before the office received 22 complaints related to an Austrian law student?s experience with how the social-networking service kept storing data users had removed from their pages.

The Irish agency can?t impose fines. If companies don?t comply, it can pursue summary proceedings that can result in a maximum fine of 3,000 euros ($3,900). If convicted of serious breaches of data policy, a court may fine a company as much as 100,000 euros.

Review: As director, Jolie shows heavy hand (AP)

The heavy-handed touch of Angelina Jolie's directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is evident right from the start, when a bomb explodes in a nightclub before our main characters, out on a date, have even shared a word.

Throughout the film, Jolie puts politics ahead of story and character, blatantly imposing a message ? an altruist message, but a message nonetheless ? on the film. And the result is a movie whose narrative feels like a fictionalized United Nations presentation.

Certainly, Jolie's bluntness is justifiable. The film, in Bosnian with subtitles, is about the Bosnian War of the early 1990s and the atrocities of genocide that came with it, conducted by the Bosnian Serb Army in an ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims.

"In the Land of Blood and Honey" exists as a caution to international inaction, to highlight the horror that transpired in the years before NATO airstrikes and international pressure brought an end to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Much of it is horrifying to watch. What Jolie depicts on camera (random murder, abysmal rape) is scarcely any less ugly than what transpires just off-screen (mass murder, a slaughtered baby).

In the midst of this is the story of a hesitant, uncertain love between a Bosnian Muslim artist, Ajla (Zana Marjanovic), and a Serbian police officer turned military captain, Danijel (Goran Kostic). They are on opposite sides of the conflict, but the coincidences of Ajla's imprisonment keep her in Danijel's orbit.

Danijel objects to the war, and his protection of Ajla compromises his stature among his men. But the ravages of war also push him toward less nuanced sympathies.

Jolie, who also wrote the screenplay, doesn't really expand the movie beyond the lovers and it suffers as a result. There is Ajla's sister (Vanesa Glodjo), who lives underground, and Danijel's cruel father, Gen. Nebojsa Vukojevich (Rade Serbedzija, in the film's best performance), who expresses the historical prejudices underlying the war.

It's easy to criticize Jolie for her showy humanitarianism or to be skeptical of such a glamorous actress trying to direct. Already, she has been something of a lightning rod, accused of plagiarizing the film's story, exploiting the rape victims of the war, vilifying the Serbs and taking advantage of her position as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency.

But Jolie deserves plenty of credit here. There are far worse things than using one's celebrity to bring attention to the dangers of pacifism in the face of war crimes and ethnic cleansing.

With the exception of a handful of visual missteps (a shot of shadows dancing on the wall, long fades to black), the film is nicely shot (Dean Semler is director of photography) and atmospheric. It particularly benefits from its largely Budapest locales. (Only second unit material was shot in Sarajevo after protests erupted over the movie's portrayal of Serbs.) The cast, mostly Bosnian actors, is largely solid, even when the film's direction is lacking.

But the storytelling is more problematic. There isn't enough context given to the overall conflict, and the love story feels increasingly myopic as the war drags on and the film's ambitions broaden.

Instead of finding a way to dramatize international inaction or pursing answers that might help explain genocide, "In the Land of Blood and Honey" makes its case only in the illustration of extreme, intolerable violence. Yes, there is power in simply showing these acts, but they eventually have a ring of calculation.

They pass without contemplation, with merely a deadening point-making that cuts off dialogue, rather than facilitates it.

"In the Land of Blood and Honey," a FilmDistrict release, is rated R for war violence and atrocities including rape, sexuality nudity and language. In Bosnian with subtitles. Running time: 127 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Remote wilderness polluted by humans

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Nitrogen from human activity has been polluting lakes in the northern hemisphere since the late 19th century. The clear signs of industrialisation can be found even in very remote lakes, thousands of kilometres from the nearest city. This is shown in new research findings published December 16 in the journal Science.

The research is based on studies of sediment from 36 lakes in the USA, Canada, Greenland and Svalbard, Norway. The researchers have analysed how the chemical composition of the sediment has changed over the centuries. Twenty-five of the lakes all show the same sign -- that biologically active nitrogen from human sources can be traced back to the end of the 19th century.

The nitrogen analyses of the lake sediments show that the changes began around 1895. The results also show that the rate of change has accelerated over the past 60 years, which is in agreement with the commercialisation of artificial fertiliser production in the 1950s. Sofia Holmgren, a researcher in Quaternary Geology at Lund University, Sweden, is the only Swede to take part in the comprehensive study.

"I have studied lakes on Svalbard, where the effects of the increased nitrogen deposition are clearly visible in the algal flora," says Sofia Holmgren.

She explains that both the species composition and production of diatoms -- microscopic siliceous algae -- have changed dramatically in the lakes on Svalbard since the start of the 20th century, with the most significant changes over the past decades.

Combustion of fossil fuels and use of fertiliser are the main sources of the increasing amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere. The nitrogen is transported with air currents and reaches the ground in rain or snow. It can travel thousands of kilometres and the nitrogen thus reaches even the most remote lakes and ecosystems.

Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plants, but overuse in more intensive farming can lead to pollution of watercourses, smog and acid rain in urban environments. However, little is known about the effects in more remote areas. An increasing number of studies of Arctic lakes are now showing major changes to the ecosystems.
