Analysts: Gadget sales to top $1 trillion in 2012 (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Developing countries like China and India will drive global sales of consumer electronics above $1 trillion this year for the first time, even as cash-strapped shoppers in the U.S. and Western Europe ease off spending for high-tech gear, industry analysts said Sunday.

Developing countries will account for 46 percent of global gadget sales in 2012, up from 37 percent four years ago, according to GfK Boutique Research and the Consumer Electronics Association.

The groups presented their forecast ahead of the massive International Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Their estimate of 2012 global electronics sales, at $1.038 trillion, represents growth of 5 percent from last year. That compares to growth of 8 percent from 2010 to 2011.

Consumers in China and other developing Asian countries, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe are snapping up high-tech goods as they climb toward a middle-class lifestyle. Meanwhile, gadget sales in the U.S., Japan and Western Europe are stagnant, unable to command a higher share of consumer spending.

Separately, NPD Group said Sunday that U.S. sales of consumer electronics fell 5.9 percent this past holiday season, as smartphones cannibalize sales of standalone gadgets like cameras, camcorders and GPS navigation devices.

The firm, which tracks retail sales, said electronics sales excluding phones totaled $9.5 billion in the five weeks ending Dec. 24.

Camcorder sales plunged 43 percent, and sales of digital picture frames fell 38 percent. GPS units slumped 33 percent. PC and TV sales slipped just 4 percent, bolstered by sales of TVs bigger than 50 inches.

Best Buy Co., the largest U.S. electronics retailer, said Friday that December sales lagged because of weak traffic. Sales at stores open a year fell 1.2 percent for the month. However, sales were strong for smartphones, tablet computers and e-readers.

The CEA and GfK expect smartphones and tablets to be the hot products globally as well, to the exclusion of other devices.

"We'll see most product categories slowing down or going into contraction," said Steve Bambridge, research director at U.K.-based GfK. Smartphones and tablets are "sucking up consumer spending" he said.

Sony Ericsson MT27i Pepper poses for the blurry-cam in first leaked pics

Android Central

We've heard (and seen) plenty about the Sony Ericsson LT26i "Nozomi" already, but one upcoming SE device that has so far only existed as a set of leaked specifications is the MT27i "Pepper", a mid-range phone that seems to share some design cues with its big brother.

Today the first photos of the Pepper, which is being called a successor to the Xperia Neo, have emerged over on XperiaBlog. There's plenty of blurry-cam action going on, but you can still get a reasonable idea of how it's supposed to look. It's smaller than the Nozomi, but it shares the more grown-up, angular look of that phone. Spec-wise, XperiaBlog says it'll sport a 1GHz dual-core CPU, with a 3.7-inch WVGA854 display and a 5MP camera with 720p recording. If true, the camera specs are a little disappointing, representing a downgrade (in terms of numbers, at least) from the excellent 8MP Exmor R in last year's Neo.

For the full set of blurry-cam shots, head over to the source link. Sony Ericsson is promising to show off some new handsets at next week's CES, so there's every chance that we'll see more of the Pepper in the near future.

Miami healthcare-technology company CareCloud attracting investors, adding jobs

CareCloud wants to help doctors spend more time practicing medicine and less time managing their practices.

Started in 2009, the Miami-based privately-held company has developed a comprehensive Internet-based system that reduces paperwork, streamlines medical practices and improves efficiency in the growing healthcare sector.

CareCloud offers a menu of online services that schedule appointments, manage patients, process insurance claims and billings, handle collections, produce analyses of office finances and operations, update electronic medical records and provide a link between patients, doctors, diagnostic centers and other healthcare organizations.

?We take care of all the heavy lifting for physicians,? said Albert Santalo, 44, CareCloud?s founder, president and CEO. ?The idea is that doctors can practice medicine and focus on patients, and not have to worry about all the details related to their practices.?

As the economic downturn drags on, CareCloud is part of the newest wave of fast-growing technology companies that are gaining notice as job creators. Just in the past five months, CareCloud has hired 30 more people and attracted $20 million in new venture capital. In December, Santalo participated in a meeting at the White House of Startup America, a presidential program designed to promote entrepreneurship.

The stakes are huge. Santalo, who has worked for many years in information technology and financial services and previously founded Avisena, a company that developed revenue management software for the healthcare sector, believes that the comprehensive, client-based products and services he and his CareCloud team have developed can help revolutionize the country?s inefficient medical system.

Realizing that much of the enormous waste in healthcare was due to administrative inefficiency and excessive paperwork, Santalo decided to build a company that would offer new technological solutions to replace older software and service systems, often developed in the 1990s before email became popular, and still used in most medical offices. He designed the basic concepts and began seeking private capital in early 2009.

?I originally was looking for $2 million and ended up with about $3 million,? Santalo said. The following year he obtained another $5 million in private investment and in September 2011 raised $20.1 million from two Silicon Valley-based investors ? Intel Capital and Norwest Venture Partners.

As he obtained fresh capital, Santalo expanded his staff of computer engineers, experts in computer science and other professionals, developed the proprietary software for CareCloud?s basic services and went to work on a variety of new applications.

Technology used by most healthcare providers ?tends to lag behind the general tech industry,? Santalo said. ?We believe a big part of what we have to do is continue innovating. To do this, we will increase our geographic footprint and expand our sales and marketing teams. Most doctors? offices are mom and pop operations and aren?t linked together,? he added. ?The cloud gives us a way to connect everyone.?

CareCloud?s basic service covers all administrative and financial aspects of medical practices, and costs $499 per month per physician. It also offers a more comprehensive revenue cycle management service, called Concierge, with fees based on a percentage of collections. All customers will receive free access to a private social network that links doctors, patients and other people and institutions in the healthcare sector.

iPhone 4S users consume nearly twice as much data as iPhone 4 - study

By Josh Ong

Published: 03:20 AM EST (12:20 AM PST) A wireless industry study has found that iPhone 4S owners on average use roughly twice as much data as iPhone 4 owners and three times as much as iPhone 3G users.

Telecom network technology firm Arieso cited the Siri virtual assistant feature as contributing to the increase, according to Reuters. The study used Apple's three-year-old iPhone 3G model as a benchmark.

The firm discovered that data usage of the iPhone 4 was 1.6 times higher than the iPhone 3G, while iPad 2 tablets consumed 2.5 times more data. The iPhone 4S was the heaviest on usage with three times the amount used by the iPhone 3G.

"I use the iPhone 4 myself and when I first heard of the iPhone 4S features I was not compelled to rush out and get one. However, the data usage numbers I am seeing make me wonder what I am missing," Arieso's chief technology officer, Michael Flanagan, said of the study.

Flanagan also noted that tablet usage closely resembled that of high-end smartphones. "A tablet still looks like a big smartphone," he said.

According to Bloomberg, Arieso's research found that one percent of the high-use subscribers consumed half of the data volumes. ?The hungry are getting hungrier,? Flanagan said.

An earlier inquiry into Siri's data usage discovered that the service consumes about 63KB per query. As such, using the feature 10 to 15 times a day would take up 18.5 to 27.7MB per month.

Siri is still in beta mode, with limited functionality outside of the U.S. Apple is, however planning a rapid international expansion for Siri this year. The company is actively hiring iOS software engineers to help develop the Application Programming Interface for Siri and port the feature to other languages.

AppleInsider tested the iPhone 4S on the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon networks shortly after its release. Extended tests showed that AT&T was generally faster than its rivals, while Verizon had broader coverage. Meanwhile, Sprint struggled with often unusable data service.

The rise in iPhone data consumption comes as Sprint is the only U.S. network to offer an unlimited data plan. CEO Dan Hesse was thought to have made comments this week undermining the carrier's unlimited offer, but it later turned out that he was referring to abusive data practices when roaming.

The iPhone has actually brought about broad changes in the wireless industry. AT&T, Apple's original carrier partner in the U.S., was initially surprised by the amount of data users consumed. The carrier was left scrambling to keep up with demand from Apple's customers, with one report from 2009 comparing the iPhone to a Hummer.

Apple waited until the second-generation iPhone to add 3G data services, allowing AT&T time to steadily improve its 3G network. The iPhone maker has also opted to wait for 4G LTE to become more mature. CEO Tim Cook said the first generation of LTE chipsets required "design compromises" that Apple was unwilling to make. Reports have suggested that Apple may release LTE iPad and iPhone models starting this year.

Verizon got a head start on AT&T when it rolled out its LTE network in December 2010. But, AT&T has been steadily making progress, announcing on Thursday that it had expanded its LTE network to 11 new cities for a total of 26 markets.

Sarkozy, Merkel urge unity over euro crisis (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti warned the European Union on Friday not to let divisions over managing its debt crisis blow up into serious splits, and President Nicolas Sarkozy warned that a euro collapse could trigger instability.

Sarkozy, who met Monti in Paris ahead of his talks in Berlin on Monday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said Rome and Paris shared a "perfectly identical view" on Europe's future and on how the crisis of confidence in the bloc should be resolved.

Monti, a respected technocrat, has been warmly embraced by the French and German leaders since he took over from Silvio Berlusconi in November and pledged to turn his crisis-hit country around.

The heads of the top three euro zone economies are now striving to achieve closer fiscal integration in Europe and convince the world they can stem a devastating debt crisis.

Sarkozy said he and Merkel would meet with Monti in Italy on January 20th, ahead of a January 23 EU finance ministers meeting and a January 30 EU leaders summit, with the bloc under pressure to flesh out an accord reached last month by all member states barring Britain for a new treaty incorporating a fiscal compact.

"I think that the main danger is the birth and development of a basic failure of understanding between populations and member states and the return of prejudices between the north and south of Europe, old and new member states, with the potential for very, very great divisions," Monti said in Paris.

Monti told an international financial conference that European institutions must build up sufficient means to dispel any doubts among investors over the solidity of the euro.

Sarkozy went even further, saying that a collapse of the single currency could endanger peace in Europe.

"We do not have the right to drop Europe, we do not have the right to let the euro be destroyed. The euro is the heart of Europe. If the euro is destroyed, it's the whole of Europe that goes up in smoke," Sarkozy said, following talks with Monti at his presidential palace.

"If Europe goes up in smoke it's the peace of our continent that will be one day or another be called into question."

The French leader said it was imperative that Europe take the right decisions. In a possible reference to the European Central Bank, he said: "To face up to this crisis of confidence, all the institutions of Europe must take fulfill their responsibilities, as each member state of the zone has been obliged to do."

Monti repeated a call for the EU not to neglect policies to stimulate economic growth, even as it keeps up a drive to control public finances. He reiterated that Italy was on course for a balanced budget by 2013 with a primary surplus, excluding interest rate payments, of 5 percent.

Monti also voiced his support for a fresh push by Sarkozy to create a financial transaction tax, but he said that Italy did not support countries implementing such a measure unilaterally.

The French government said earlier that it was ready to push ahead with a so-called "Tobin tax" even without EU partners like Germany on board. Britain is one of several countries that strongly opposes the tax idea.

Etsy Makes It Easy For Users To Post Items To Pinterest With New ?Pin It? Button

pinitOnline pinboard Pinterest is all the rage these days, and as Etsy is showing today with its latest product announcement, e-commerce sites are starting to realize the power of pinning. The e-commerce marketplace is making it easier for Pinterest users to pin and organize Etsy items, via a new Pin It button on Etsy listing pages, along side the Tweet and Like buttons. Etsy says that its members are big fans of Pinterest (and so is Etsy), so the integration makes sense. Etsy is also using Pinterest's price display feature. So when you pin listings with the Pin It button, the required pin description field is prefilled with the item title and price. Users can also add a note about why they like the item, which will be added to their Pinterest posting.
