CLEVELAND November 9, 2012 The Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), the nation's oldest transplant association, has chosen Jonathan Lass, MD, for the 2012 R. Townley Paton Award for his work on corneal preservation and his 30-plus-year career as an ophthalmologist and medical educator.
Lass is the Charles I Thomas Professor and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center, and director of the UH Eye Institute. Lass is also medical director for the Cleveland Eye Bank, and medical director of the Case Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center.
Over the past fiscal year, Case Western Reserve rose from 11th in the nation to fifth in vision research funding from the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the National Institutes of Health. Case Western Reserve receives almost $15 million annually from the NEI.
This success is, in part, due to the efforts of Krzysztof Palczewski, PhD, the chair of the Department of Pharmacology, who also holds an appointment in ophthalmology and is internationally renowned for his work toward restoring sight in those whose blindness relates to diseases of the retina. Faculty from other departments, including medicine and pathology, also conduct vision-related research.
The eye bank organization will present the Paton Award, its highest honor, during the EBAA/Cornea Society Fall Educational Symposium in Chicago on Friday, Nov. 9. The award is presented annually to an ophthalmologist in recognition of outstanding contributions to the EBAA's development, and for exemplifying the precepts of Paton, considered the father of modern eye-banking and the founder of the first eye bank established in the United States.
As the recipient, Lass will deliver the Paton lecture at the EBAA symposium.

"In any of these thefts of chips, it's very difficult to cash these in," said Nevada Gaming Control Board Chief of Enforcement Jerry Markling. "Licensees generally know who their customers are."
Police didn't disclose exactly how the theft occurred, but they said no weapon was involved, and the man didn't confront anyone during the incident, which happened about 6 a.m. on Oct. 10.
Unlucky: Man robbed of $10,000 won at casino
Officials at the Venetian did not immediately return a message Monday afternoon seeking comment.
Bellagio a target The theft was a departure from two high-profile heists in recent months. In May, two men wearing wigs walked up to a table at the Bellagio, pepper-sprayed a blackjack dealer, and snatched $115,000 in chips.

Why Scott took his own life remains a mystery. Interviews done by the coroner?s office with Scott?s friends and family indicate that he only suffered from minor ailments -- like hip and back pain -- at the time of his death.
On Aug. 19, Scott parked his Toyota Prius -- with its caution lights on -- in the slow lane of the bridge before proceeding to scale an 18-foot barrier fence.
Once at the top, a witness said Scott sat to survey the situation before leaping from the massive suspension bridge, according to the New York Daily News.
In his car, notes were found, but authorities said they shed no light on the motive for his suicide.
As Sheamus was making his ring entrance for his match against CM Punk on Raw Monday, WWE broadcaster and mouthpiece Michael Cole acknowledged WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's Twitter remark to the WWE Champion on Saturday by taking it out of context.
"Go get em, kid. Always be a student of the game and keep working hard. Safe travels. #respect from the #BSR," Austin wrote.
The statement was in response to Sheamus respectfully acknowledging Austin's critical remarks regarding his performance level in a recent column for Fighting Spirit Magazine. The SmackDown wrestler tweeted, "Appreciate words from @steveaustinBSR - i strive to get better everyday fella & hard work is something i love.. See me bring Hell in a Cell."
Cole instead branded the exchange as Austin taking the initiative to give the WWE Champion a ringing endorsement on Twitter, and Sheamus responding to it. The WWE Hall of Famer's critical column remarks were not acknowledged on-air.
In the column, Austin offered his opinion on WWE's World Titles and said Sheamus is not ready to be World Heavyweight Champion.
"Sheamus is a big talented dude, no doubt about it. Can he get to where the company wants him to go? That remains to be seen, and there's a lot of work required from both him and the company in order to jump to that superstar level," Austin wrote. "He's doing fine for the amount of time he's been in the business, and there is no disrespect intended, but there are so many aspects that go towards making a guy draw money with the title."

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? Dale Earnhardt Jr. is expected back on the track next weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
Team owner Rick Hendrick said Sunday that NASCAR's most popular driver has been headache-free for more than a week, and that tests by a specialist in Pittsburgh showed no lingering issues from two concussions that Earnhardt sustained in a six-week span.
Earnhardt will get back into a car on Monday and, if everything goes well, could be cleared to drive by neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty during a follow-up visit on Tuesday.
"Everything's great," Hendrick said before Sunday's race at Kansas Speedway. "He feels good. He's done everything they told him to do. He didn't have any more headaches after, I guess it was Thursday or Friday of Charlotte week, so everything's good."
Earnhardt was first injured in a crash during a tire test Aug. 29 at Kansas, but didn't seek treatment for the mild concussion. He was part of a 25-car pileup on Oct. 7 at Talladega and sought treatment from a doctor who ultimately benched him for two races.
Earnhardt's doctor had said he would not be cleared to race until he'd gone at least four days headache-free, then went through various tests and spent some time behind the wheel.
That wheel time will occur Monday during a closed test that Hendrick said will probably take place at Gresham Motorsports Park in Georgia.
"He's burning up to get in the car. I mean, he wanted to run this weekend," Hendrick said. "He's very anxious. He wants to get back. No way you're going to hold him out unless the doctor wouldn't clear him, but he's good to go."
Earnhardt, who has one win and 10 top-5s this season, was seventh in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings before the crash at Talladega dropped him to 11th in the standings.
Regan Smith has been replacing him in the Hendrick Motorsports ride, but Hendrick said he doesn't plan to have Smith in the bullpen if an issue arises with Earnhardt at Martinsville.
"We don't think there's any reason to," Hendrick said. "I'd be really surprised if we have to, but we could always go to he or A.J. (Allmendinger), one of the two."
Hendrick said he was concerned there might be a long-term problem when Earnhardt's headaches persisted, which is why he consulted with several specialists. The injury snapped his streak of 461 consecutive starts, the fifth-longest active streak in the Sprint Cup series.
"It was good news when we went down there and the specialist looked at the MRI and there was no damage, no bleeding, no bruising, so that was great news," Hendrick said. "Junior, his head was hurting him bad enough I thought we might have a problem, but we're just really fortunate."
I am one of those people who absolutely detest SPAM. Spammers are unscrupulous, dishonest people too dumb to use proper Internet Marketing techniques. For me, annoyance turned to disgust when a genealogy forum I created became inundated daily with spammers, including porn. Every day, I removed the spam only to have it show up the next day. Finally, I tracked it down to a company called SEO Profiler who spread their client?s garbage wherever they could over the internet. I had to threaten them with a lawsuit before they would stop.
The laws that finally came into effect regarding spamming saw a rise in the hijacking of someone?s email address so that they could use that email address and not be subject to the law. Many of us have had to change our email address due to this.
How do spammers get our email address?
There are email address spiders that search the web and harvest a list of victim's email addresses that they find in various places. Another method is to send out ?tribute? and ?inspirational? emails. ?If you respect our troops?, ?if you love Jesus?, ?if you are my friend?, ?if you hate bullies?, etc., send this on or send it back to me to show you care.
How to prevent your email address being hijacked
I know that pretty well every one of you have friends or loved ones that are simply not very internet savvy. If you send some of these folks jokes or cool things to watch, there is a good chance that they will forward your email to others. That is fine but they often simply click on the forward and send it on to their friends, leaving your email address showing. It is just a matter of time before your email will become hijacked and thousands of people will be receiving spam emails, supposedly from you.
I try my best to prevent this in these ways.
First, I go over the email I intend to forward, making sure that any email address showing is deleted.
Secondly, I use BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) method to select recipients. That creates a single address of undisclosedrecipients@........com instead of individual personal email addresses. There is nothing to harvest.
Lastly, I put the following as an automatic signature on each email.
Thank you for deleting my email address & personal history before you forward it.
Thank you for using BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) instead of "To" and "CC" when sending group e-mails. This helps prevent SPAM & hackers.
Example of a real Spammer
I received a SPAM this email morning. The creep used my friend's email address to disseminate it and it was just a single link to a "Raspberry Drops" SPAM web site. The spammer had used a copy of the Fox News website to try to fool people into thinking they had published the article. This incredibly intelligent person left the O out of the web address to pretend it is from Fox. When you go down the page and try to leave a comment, of course, it does not work and more than the raspberry drops would. Also, each of the links at the top go to a "buy my raspberry crap" page.
Not long ago, I switched to Gmail and found it to be very good at detecting and preventing SPAM. If a SPAM email does get through, click on the ?mark as SPAM? and everyone else on Gmail will be protected in the future from this same email.
There is a never ending list of trolls, thieves and unscrupulous people out there on the web. So, protect yourself and others as much as you can.

A website with files showing the Boy Scouts of America's cover-up of decades of sexual abuse is generating interest from people wanting to know who the alleged abusers are and whether people who molested them as Scouts are in the files.

Release of the files has also prompted a debate on the Boy Scouts' Facebook page. Some people said they'd never allow their children to be involved in the organization and criticized the secrecy of the files. Others described positive experiences in the Scouts for themselves or their children, saying the organization's efforts to prevent abuse have improved significantly.
The 14,500 pages of Scout files, from 1959-1985, were posted Thursday on the website of Kelly Clark, the Portland attorney who used the files as evidence in a 2010 lawsuit he won against the Scouts.
The website got more than 200,000 hits within the first few hours of the files' posting, crashing the site.
Clark said his firm has received about four dozen emails from people about the documents. About half came from people who say they were abused when they were in the Scouts and were interested in filing lawsuits.
Some of the emails have given details about alleged abuse, Clark said.
There are also emails from people who tell of other alleged perpetrators who are not in the files.
"We had many people say thank you for posting the documents," Clark said.
At least six people have contacted reporters for The Associated Press with questions about reporting sex abuse when they were in the Scouts. None agreed to speak to the AP on the record.
The Scouts have said they plan to review every file from 1965 to the present and, in cases where it's unclear whether the incident was reported to police, the Scouts said they'll contact authorities.
Deron Smith, spokesman for the Scouts, said Thursday the organization is currently looking through those files to find cases of "good-faith suspicions" so they can be reported to police. The Scout files are filled with unsubstantiated allegations.
In their own review of the files that were released on Thursday, the Scouts found that law enforcement had been involved in about two-thirds of the cases. The organization is going through the remainder to find cases where there seem to be good reasons to alert law authorities.
The Scouts have apologized for not following up. The files were created for the purpose of registering Scout leaders, Smith said, and were considered internal, confidential documents, which is why they weren't always shared with authorities.
Attorney Paul Mones, Clark's colleague, said uploading the files "democratized" information that was only available to lawyers and the Scouts.
"It's a testament to the new generation of communication," Mones said.
The files have been maintained by the Scouts since soon after their founding in 1910. They consist of memos from local and national Scout executives, handwritten letters from victims and their parents and newspaper clippings about legal cases.
The files contain details about proven molesters, but also unsubstantiated allegations. People paging through the files would find both. Clark says there are undoubtedly some people in the files who were wrongly accused, and the Scouts point out that many cases of abuse were dealt with properly.
For those who say they were molested, statutes of limitations in most states would prevent many people from filing lawsuits or criminal charges, Clark said. But in some cases ? like a first-degree sexual assault in New York ? the state has set no time limit.
Legal experts say that aside from the statute of limitations, it could be difficult to bring charges against suspected molesters in the files because victims need to be found, and they need to be persuaded to give evidence.
"Trying to prosecute a case that old, you need to have a willing victim," said Josh Marquis, district attorney for Clatsop County in Oregon.
Victims of abuse years ago may be unwilling to come forward because it would create upheaval in their lives, Marquis said.
With the files now available, law enforcement and the public can do their own checking, something David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said should have been available to those groups all along.
"The Scouts have got to expose, list and severely punish every former employee or volunteer who ignored or concealed child sex crimes," Clohessy said. "Nothing will have a quicker and more long-lasting impact of changing the culture of recklessness and secrecy."
LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Rosneft is poised to secure a tighter grip on Russia's oil industry by buying BP's 50 percent stake in TNK-BP, the country's third largest producing company.
The British oil company's board was expected to consider a cash and stock offer worth over $25 billion on Friday that would allow it to exit a profitable but troublesome joint venture.
The offer is not tied to asset deals or exploration tie-ups with Rosneft, although sources said those may follow.
Rosneft has already made a tentative offer to BP's equal partners in TNK-BP, the AAR consortium owned by four Soviet-born tycoons, that could be worth up to $28 billion.
"If and when BP reaches any agreement it will make an announcement at the appropriate time," BP said in a statement.
Some British newspapers reported that BP's chief executive Bob Dudley would be recommending the offer to his board.
"The offer is in. It's a split of the two," (cash and shares). It's a clean offer and there's no other plan on the table," said one source.
"If he thinks it's the best offer Dudley will recommend it but the board may say we need to reconvene and consider this aspect or that. It's not an automatic tick in the box."
Sources have said a three-way deal that could soon emerge, with some details to be hammered out during a visit to London this week by Rosneft Chief Executive Igor Sechin.
They said BP and the four tycoons could emerge with minority stakes in an enlarged Rosneft plus billions of dollars in cash in exchange for the highly profitable company.
The combined group would dominate Russia's increasingly state-controlled oil industry.
STATE CONTROL
President Vladimir Putin has been regaining state control of assets that passed cheaply to a small group of businessmen when privatized in a hurry in the 1990s.
Rosneft's absorption of another oil firm, Yukos, and the imprisonment of its former owner Mikhail Khodorkovsky in the mid-2000s was the biggest step in this process until now.
That was also masterminded by Sechin, who was deputy chief of staff at the Kremlin - Putin's gatekeeper - at the time.
Citing this background, sources said that although BP would likely get stock in Rosneft as part of its package, the tycoons might not, and that a structure of deferred payments of more cash could be on the cards for the AAR partners.
A stock purchase by BP could also allow Putin to show some of his critics that he is diversifying, not concentrating, ownership in the oil industry, analysts have said.
A reminder of that pressure on him came from a Russian cabinet meeting on Friday.
First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said Rosneft's prospective buyout of TNK-BP would not deflect the government from reducing the state's stake in the country's largest oil company from the current 75.2 percent by the end of 2014.
"Regardless of Rosneft's further activities in acquiring assets, our strategic goal of privatization remains," Shuvalov said after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. "We will proceed very carefully, as our president has said, paying attention to the quality of investors and maximizing the proceeds that are raised."
MORE OUTPUT THAN EXXON
A combined Rosneft-TNK-BP would produce well over 4 million barrels of oil and gas a day - more than U.S. No.1 Exxon Mobil , the biggest producer among the world's investor-owned oil companies.
To finance a deal worth over $50 billion if both parties get bought out, about $15 billion could be met by a loan Rosneft has been negotiating with international banks.
It could get another $3 billion from Russian banks, but one financial source said "there is a point where raising debt would have a negative impact on Rosneft's credit rating."
Some of the offer will be in stock, sources have said. Rosneft already holds over 12.5 percent in treasury stock - worth over $9 billion based on Friday's stock market valuation of $74 billion, and it could issue more.
Sources have also said that the AAR side of the deal could involve deferred payments over a number of years.
Finally, the TNK-BP business itself has strong cashflow and little debt, allowing the partners to rake off $4 billion a year in dividends in recent times.
Bankers told ThomsonReuters LPC that Rosneft's $15 billion loan request had not changed since this week's developments. The loan package consists of bridge loans to be refinanced with bond issues and a term loan that will be held by banks. A total of 10 banks have already joined the deal and the loan could be concluded in three to four weeks.
Rosneft declined to comment. AAR has declined to comment since abandoning its own plan to buy out the BP stake this week and leaving Rosneft as the only bidder. BP would not comment beyond its statement.
Shares in BP climbed 3 percent on Wednesday and added a further 0.7 percent on Thursday and 0.5 percent on Friday to 454.3 pence, trading at their highest levels since April.
Investors see potential for BP's fraught history in Russia to take a positive turn, even if their half of the deal does not go through. The stock underperforms its peers by most financial measures because of uncertainty in Russia and with regard to its liabilities for the U.S. Gulf oil spill.
ARCTIC REVISIT
The AAR part of the deal is a re-hash of a plan that fell through last year, under which BP and Rosneft offered to buy out the tycoons and sign a tie-up deal to explore in the Arctic together.
Relations between BP and the tycoons Mikhail Fridman, German Khan, Viktor Vekselberg and Len Blavatnik have long been fraught. The soured further last year when AAR blocked the proposed co-operation between BP and Rosneft, saying it violated a TNK-BP exclusivity agreement.
An attempt to resolve the dispute was thwarted when AAR turned down a $32 billion offer for its stake from BP and Rosneft in May 2011. Relations deteriorated further, with Fridman quitting as CEO of TNK-BP in May this year.
BP put its stake up for sale the following month in an attempt to bring the issue to a close.
